RetroBreak Recap – June 2024

Welcome to the June 2024 recap! This month was by far my most productive so far! I had most of the calendar free so I could finally try an experiment, uploading two videos a week. Would it make any difference to the stats at the end of the month? Would it draw in more money than usual? Was it worth the extra time commitment? Would it be too overwhelming?

As you can see from the table below, I managed it! Two videos every week, as well as keeping up regular podcast and streams! I did make sure the videos wouldn’t be too complicated so I could easily film and upload them only a few days apart, but even so, it was a massive time commitment…

The month was off to a great start, with the first two videos each doing better than average, especially the first part of my room tour series! However, despite doubling the amount of content, the month’s stats by the end were mostly the same as usual… I was expecting to get well over 1000 subscribers, and closer to £500 or £600, so I came away from the experiment a little shocked and confused. But I think I’ve figured out what went wrong.

A few months ago, I watched this interview:

I made some notes back then, and looking back at my progress this month, a lot of what I wrote down there seems to ring true:

  • Expectation leads to suffering
  • Focus on performance doesn’t lead to performance
  • Any iteration of a successful video will never out perform the original

With each subsequent episode of the room tour doing worse than the last, I think it’s safe to say that yes, I suffered from unreasonable expectations, and yes, any spin on the same idea will never out perform the original.

Some of the later room tour videos genuinely did terrible compared to average:

After the first few, I started to regret the idea of splitting it up across many episodes, but I stuck with it, and uploaded 6 different episodes.

As well as that, I still managed to create some unique content too! I went to visit a new game shop with my friend Jack, and it turned out we went there on the perfect day! A complete UK Saturn collection had just been traded in, and I managed to get most of it on camera, and came away with some great games too!

Overall, although the double video uploads didn’t exactly go as planned, I’m still happy with the progress, and it was nice to go through my collection and share my thoughts on some of my favourite games!

In July, I have two more sponsored videos to upload, then i’m free! First will be a DS Flash cart video (Which I forgot to make a few month ago!) Then another emulation handheld.

After that, i’m going to try and make some unique videos that aren’t based on anything I’ve made before. Im excited to finally get everything out the way so im able to focus on interesting stuff again!
