2023 Analysis + Plans for 2024!

2023 was the best year ever for my content! Let’s break it down and see where we can go in 2024!

Watch a more detailed breakdown of this post here:

I am very happy to say that on the whole, 2023 has been so much better than 2022! All my channels have seen big jumps in numbers and the community around it all has been so incredibly supportive. In terms of numbers, here’s how it compares:

2023

2022

Numbers don’t tell the whole story though, and they are inflated due to a few breakaways videos this year. Both my GBA and GB top games videos have done incredibly well, pulling in around 500,000 views between them so far!

This year, I tracked every piece of content that I made, here’s the total number of content I produced own each category.

Here’s the breakdown of each type of content and how many subscribers it brought in. As much as the Top Games lists really help bring in a new audience, I do want to be careful with releasing too many list videos.

Once I’ve made a top games list for a console, it really limits me in the future because I will have already covered the best games, and made the video that is guaranteed to do the best too. I want to try and make more content that can also bring in new viewers without causing myself to be stuck in a corner with nowhere to go…

I also tracked the stats at the end of each month, and used averages to predict where I’ll be at the end of 2024…

2023 saw roughly between 100% and 150% growth in views, subs and revenue, so I used double this years final stats as a basis for what to expect by the end of next year.

With the plans that I’ve got in place, I really think I’ve got a good chance to meet, and even exceed these goals next year! (You can read all about those plans on Patreon!)

Here’s a breakdown of how each month went last year:

Videos

Let’s take a look at two different, but equally important types of videos this year, ones that did well, and ones I enjoyed making! Hopefully there was some overlap…

Some of my favourite videos to make this year:

  • GBA History
  • Insomnia Vlog
  • Nintendo Handhelds / Console Journey
  • Interesting items in my collection

Top performing

  • Top 15 GBA games
  • Top 20 Game Boy Games
  • Miyoo Mini Review
  • Pushing the G Cloud behind its limits

Here’s a look at how some of the videos this year did across a variety of metrics:

Streams

I’ve been streaming once a week every Tuesday this year, and seen some good growth in followers and subscribers, but not to much in regular viewers. The plan was to use streaming time to gather footage and my thoughts on various games for the channel. I kind of lost sight of this a bit, and strayed a bit from the retro games I was planning to play, so next year I’ll try and focus more, and if I do want to stream other games, I’ll do so on a different day so my regular viewers know when to expect regular streams.

Podcasts

The podcast has suffered this year. I don’t know why but I’ve found it hard to sit down and talk, I have been spending a long time trying to come up with a plan to streamline the process so I can spend less time planning and worrying about the content and just make it. I still don’t have that fully planned out, and the hardest thing for me is to find the time to sit down and record it without interfering with time I would be spending on videos or streams… and most weekends I’m busy or away for work or other obligations.

Website

I haven’t uploaded many new posts to the website this year, it’s mostly used to just direct people to my other platforms. I do plan on updating it more next year though. Here’s the stats at the end of 2023
